Flush Pulls & Sliding Door Hardware: Sizes, Types and How to Choose

Not every door can take a projecting handle. A pantry door that slides past a fixed cupboard, a cavity slider that disappears into the wall, or a wardrobe door that overlaps its neighbour on a track all need hardware that sits flush with the face of the door rather than standing proud of it. That's the job of a flush pull — and getting the size, style and fixing details right matters more here than with a standard lever, because a flush pull is mortised into the door itself.

What a Flush Pull Does

A flush pull is a recessed handle set into a shallow cavity routed into the door face, so the door can slide past adjoining doors, walls or joinery without the handle catching. It's the standard choice for cavity sliding doors, bypass wardrobe doors, pantry and butler's pantry doors, and laundry cupboards.

The Main Types

Flush pulls come in a few shapes, and the shape usually follows the door type:

  • Round cup pulls — typically 60mm, 76mm or 100mm in diameter. A single finger or thumb hooks into the cup. Common on pantry doors and smaller cupboard doors where only light use is expected.
  • Rectangular or oblong flush pulls — usually 100mm to 200mm long, sized to the door's width and expected grip. These suit taller cavity sliders and wardrobe doors, and give a more secure hold than a round cup on a heavier door.
  • Edge pulls (finger pulls) — mounted into the leading edge of the door rather than the face, so nothing at all is visible from the front. These work well on minimal slab doors and on doors thick enough to take the recess without weakening the edge.
  • Privacy flush pull sets — a flush pull paired with a sliding lock, used on bathroom and laundry cavity sliders where the door needs to latch as well as open.

Door Thickness and Sizing

Because the pull is mortised in, door thickness is the first thing to check. Most flush pulls are made for doors between 30mm and 45mm thick; anything thinner risks breaking through to the opposite face or leaving too little timber around the recess. A hollow-core door usually needs a solid timber block glued in behind the pull location before mortising — worth confirming with your joiner or door supplier before hardware arrives on site.

For rectangular pulls, check fixing centres the same way you would for a cabinet pull — common spacings are 96mm and 128mm, with wider centres on longer pulls for tall doors. On a cavity slider or bypass wardrobe with two or three overlapping panels, you'll need a flush pull on each leaf, positioned so they land at a consistent height and don't collide with the adjoining panel when the doors are fully open or closed.

Matching the Hardware to the Door System

The door mechanism itself changes what you need:

  • Cavity sliders disappear fully into a wall cavity, so a flush pull is essentially the only option — there's no room for anything that projects.
  • Bypass wardrobe doors run on an exposed track with two or three panels overlapping each other. Flush pulls keep the panels from clashing as they pass, and let each door sit flat against the next.
  • Barn-style sliding doors run on an exposed track in front of the wall, so a projecting pull or barn door handle can be used on the leading edge — but many homeowners still choose a flush pull on the closing edge so the door sits flat when shut.

Choosing a Finish

Flush pulls are available in the same finish range as the rest of a hardware suite — Brushed Brass, Antique Brass, Aged Brass, Black Brass, Nickel, Polished Nickel and Aged Nickel — so a pantry or laundry pull can be matched to nearby cabinetry hardware, and a wardrobe pull to the door hardware used elsewhere in the bedroom. Since flush pulls are handled with a full hand rather than fingertips, it's worth keeping the same finish family used on adjoining cabinet pulls, rather than adding another finish into a room that already has two or three.

Installation Notes

Flush pulls are mortised using a template supplied with the hardware, then screw-fixed from the rear of the recess. Because the mortise is cut into the door face, this is best planned before the door is hung and finished, not retrofitted afterwards. On a new build or renovation, confirm door thickness and core construction with your joiner when you finalise the pull size, and order early — made-to-order solid brass hardware takes longer to arrive than stock items, so it should be one of the first things locked in on a joinery schedule.

A Quick Buying Checklist

  • Measure the door thickness and confirm whether it's solid or hollow-core.
  • Count how many doors need a pull — bypass and cavity systems usually need one per leaf.
  • Choose round, rectangular or edge-mounted based on door width and expected grip.
  • Check fixing centres against any existing cabinet hardware you're matching.
  • Pick a finish that matches the cabinetry or door hardware already specified for the room.

Getting these details settled before the doors are hung avoids the most common flush pull problem: a recess cut to the wrong size, or a pull that collides with its neighbour on a bypass track. A little measuring up front makes the hardware disappear into the door exactly as it's meant to.
