Coastal homes are harder on architectural hardware than sheltered inland interiors. Airborne salt, humidity and direct weather can accelerate surface changes and finish wear, so the right specification depends on where the hardware is installed, how exposed it is and how it will be maintained.

Start with exposure, not colour

An internal bedroom lever in a coastal suburb and an exterior handle facing sea spray do not experience the same environment. Before choosing a finish, classify each opening as sheltered interior, near-exterior, covered exterior or directly exposed.

The more exposed the location, the more important it is to confirm that the complete product and finish are appropriate for that application. Do not assume that a material suitable for an internal door is automatically suitable for a fully exposed external opening.

Why salt air matters

Remove dust and salt deposits before they build up. For suitable finishes, a soft cloth with fresh water or a mild cleaning solution followed by thorough drying is generally gentler than abrasive pads or harsh chemicals. Increase the cleaning frequency where hardware is close to the ocean, exposed to prevailing winds or handled with wet hands.

Avoid allowing aggressive cleaners used on adjacent glass, stone or bathrooms to sit on the hardware.

Specify the house by zones

You do not need one product for every location. A sensible coastal hardware schedule might use decorative solid brass door handles throughout protected interiors while selecting hardware specifically confirmed for the most exposed exterior openings.

Inside the home, carry the chosen finish into cabinet hardware, door stops and accessories to keep the scheme visually connected.
